“Abia Doctors Suspend Strike as Freed Orthopaedic Surgeon Ends Nine Day Kidnap Ordeal”
The Abia State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its planned industrial action following the release of kidnapped orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, who regained his freedom after spending nine days in captivity.
Dr. Aguocha’s abduction had sparked widespread concern within Nigeria’s medical community, prompting the NMA in Abia State to consider a strike action in protest against growing insecurity and the increasing threat faced by healthcare professionals across the country.
Confirming the development, the association announced that the planned withdrawal of services had been suspended after the surgeon was safely reunited with his family. The decision came amid relief among colleagues, patients, and stakeholders who had closely followed the case.
The incident once again highlights the security challenges confronting healthcare workers in Nigeria, particularly in regions where criminal activities such as kidnapping for ransom have become a persistent concern. Medical associations and civil society groups have repeatedly called on authorities to strengthen security measures and provide greater protection for essential workers.
While celebrating Dr. Aguocha’s release, the NMA emphasized the need for sustained efforts to address insecurity and prevent future attacks on healthcare personnel. The association also reiterated its commitment to advocating for safer working conditions for doctors and other medical professionals.
The release of the surgeon has been welcomed by residents and healthcare stakeholders in Abia State, who hope the development will help restore confidence within the health sector while drawing renewed attention to the broader issue of security in Nigeria.
