“NDLEA Cracks Down on Drug Hotspots Around Bayero University Kano, Arrests Six Suspects”
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its campaign against illicit drug activities in Kano State following a coordinated raid around the old site area of Bayero University Kano, leading to the arrest of six suspected drug dealers and users.
According to NDLEA officials, the operation targeted identified drug joints and black spots operating within and around the university community, an area authorities say has increasingly become vulnerable to substance abuse and illegal narcotics distribution. During the raid, operatives reportedly dismantled several makeshift drug dens and recovered quantities of suspected illicit substances.
The anti narcotics agency stated that the exercise forms part of its broader nationwide strategy to curb drug trafficking, youth addiction, and criminal networks linked to narcotics consumption across tertiary institutions and urban communities. Security personnel involved in the operation stressed that the crackdown was intelligence-driven and aimed at protecting students and residents from the growing dangers associated with drug abuse.
The operation around the BUK old site has reignited conversations about substance abuse among young Nigerians, particularly within academic environments where authorities and civil society groups continue to raise concerns over rising addiction rates. Analysts say the proliferation of illicit drugs remains a major social and security challenge, contributing to violence, cultism, mental health issues, and other criminal activities in parts of the country.
In recent months, the NDLEA has expanded enforcement operations across several Nigerian states, targeting notorious drug corridors, recreational hotspots, and trafficking syndicates. The agency has repeatedly emphasized the need for stronger community collaboration, public awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation initiatives to complement enforcement measures.
Residents around the university community have expressed mixed reactions following the raid. While many welcomed the crackdown as necessary to restore order and improve safety, others called for sustained intervention programs, youth empowerment initiatives, and closer engagement between security agencies and educational institutions to address the root causes of drug abuse.
The arrested suspects are expected to face further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s drug enforcement laws.
