Youths in Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo LGA, Imo State, have arrested a suspect linked to the killing of Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo.
The arrest followed an investigation led by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa. The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, confessed to the crime in a video that has since gone viral.
According to Okonkwo, he and an accomplice, Emmanuel, stormed Achumba’s apartment around 7 p.m. He said both men took turns raping the student after she rejected their advances.
“She was the only one in the house. The other two students had left for their nursing experience,” a community source said. The building was owned by someone based in the U.S.
Okonkwo claimed he hit Achumba with a stick after the assault, while Emmanuel later used a knife on her throat.
“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. I had sex with her twice, Emmanuel once. After that, I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” he said in the confession.
Police spokesperson in Imo State, Henry Okoye, had not responded to inquiries at the time of reporting.
The killing has sparked outrage in the community, with residents calling for swift justice.
