  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called ā€œFulani terroristsā€ following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. ā€œThere is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,ā€ Itua said. ā€œThis is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.ā€ The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. ā€œIt has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,ā€ the statement added. ā€œTheir agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.ā€ Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. ā€œWe remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,ā€ the government declared. ā€œWe will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.ā€

Trump Orders Temporary Tax Relief on Red Dyed Diesel as US Diesel Prices Surge.

WASHINGTON, United StatesĀ  US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order temporarily easing restrictions on the use of tax exempt red dyed diesel on public roads, as his administration seeks to reduce the impact of sharply rising diesel prices on American farmers, truckers and other businesses.

The order, signed on October 5, 2026, directs the US Treasury Department to determine whether certain federal diesel-tax obligations can be deferred for fuel used between October 5 and December 31, 2026. Where legally authorized, the deferred taxes would be subject to no interest or penalties. The order also directs the Internal Revenue Service not to impose specified penalties for the sale or use of dyed diesel on highways during the same period.

Red-dyed diesel is chemically similar to conventional diesel but is dyed red to distinguish fuel that is generally sold without the federal highway fuel tax because it is intended for off road purposes, including agricultural machinery and certain construction equipment. The federal diesel tax is 24.4 cents per gallon, meaning the temporary tax treatment could provide direct savings for users who gain access to the cheaper fuel.

The White House said the measure is intended to provide immediate relief to farmers, truckers and workers facing elevated operating costs. The executive order also instructs the Agriculture and Transportation departments to coordinate with states, fuel distributors and industry stakeholders to facilitate access to dyed diesel and encourage states to adopt corresponding policies where legally permissible.

The move comes as US diesel prices have reached historically high levels. Reuters reported that diesel prices climbed to about $6.50 per gallon last month, with disruptions linked to conflicts involving Iran and Russia contributing to pressure on refinery operations and global fuel supplies.

Trump announced the measure during a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, just weeks before the November 3 US midterm elections. The timing has placed the administration’s response to fuel and living costs under heightened political scrutiny, particularly among farmers and trucking dependent communities. The Associated Press reported that Trump presented the measure as an effort to reduce costs across the economy.

However, the order does not by itself guarantee that every state will immediately permit the unrestricted use of red dyed diesel on public roads. The federal directive specifically calls for engagement with state governments and encourages corresponding state action, meaning the practical effect can depend on state level implementation and applicable laws.

Energy analysts have also questioned how significantly the policy can reduce pump prices. Reuters reported before the order was signed that expanding access to red dyed diesel could provide some financial relief to users but would not increase the overall supply of diesel or fundamentally change the market forces driving prices higher.

The Trump administration has pursued several measures in response to the fuel price surge, including working with international partners on emergency fuel supplies. G7 countries recently announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil and refined fuel products, including diesel, as governments attempt to ease pressure on energy markets.

For American consumers and businesses, the immediate question is whether the temporary tax relief will translate into meaningful reductions in transportation and production costs. While diesel users could benefit from lower tax burdens, the broader price of diesel remains influenced by refining capacity, global supply, geopolitical instability and market demand.

The executive order therefore represents a short term intervention rather than a permanent restructuring of the US diesel market. Its effectiveness will depend on implementation, state cooperation and whether wider fuel supply pressures ease before the temporary measures expire at the end of 2026.
