Lagos Government Backs Small Businesses With Grants, Equipment and ₦10bn Financing Scheme.
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) through financial grants, business equipment and access to affordable financing, as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth, promote entrepreneurship and create jobs.
The initiative includes grants ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦250,000, alongside productive equipment such as sewing machines, freezers and grinding machines distributed to business owners to strengthen their operations and improve productivity.
According to News reports on October 25, the intervention was announced during activities marking the state’s 2026 MSME Day celebration, organised by the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment.
The government said the programme was designed to help entrepreneurs overcome some of the challenges facing small businesses, particularly limited access to finance, high operating costs and difficulties expanding into wider markets.
₦10 Billion Financing Scheme Targets Small Businesses
A major component of the state’s support framework is the Lagos State Access to Finance for SMEs through Cooperatives (LASMECO) scheme, a ₦10 billion financing initiative established in partnership with the Bank of Industry and Sterling Bank.
According to The Guardian, the state government has released ₦5 billion as matched funding for the programme, which enables eligible cooperative-based businesses to access loans of up to ₦10 million at an annual interest rate of nine per cent.
The loans reportedly come with a six month repayment moratorium and repayment periods of up to 36 months, without collateral requirements under the scheme’s stated terms.
The initiative seeks to address funding barriers that often prevent small businesses from purchasing equipment, increasing production, employing additional workers and competing effectively in the marketplace.
Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Bada Ambrose Medebem, said government interventions were intended to address constraints such as inadequate access to finance, inflation, high energy costs and limited access to larger markets.
Export Opportunities and Business Development
Beyond financial assistance, the state government is also promoting export readiness to help local businesses access markets beyond Nigeria.
The Lagos State Export Readiness Programme has reportedly trained 253 businesses to improve their preparedness for international trade. Twenty top performing enterprises were also sponsored to participate in the Intra African Trade Fair in Algiers, where they secured export relationships, according to P.M. News.
The state government has encouraged entrepreneurs to improve product quality, packaging, certification and business documentation to strengthen their competitiveness and increase their chances of attracting investment.
Officials have also highlighted the importance of innovation, technology adoption and sustainable industrial development in helping small enterprises expand their operations.
However, inadequate documentation, weak business governance structures, inflation and high energy costs remain significant obstacles for many businesses seeking formal financing.
Economic Implications for Lagos
Micro, small and medium sized enterprises play an important role in Nigeria’s economy through employment generation, local production, innovation and income creation.
In Lagos, where commercial activity spans manufacturing, fashion, agriculture, food processing, technology and services, access to affordable finance could help businesses improve productivity and create additional employment opportunities.
Nevertheless, the effectiveness of government support will depend on transparent beneficiary selection, timely disbursement, effective monitoring and the ability of participating businesses to use the funds and equipment productively.
Ensuring that support reaches eligible entrepreneurs across different communities will also be important to achieving the programme’s wider economic objectives.
For business owners, the schemes represent potential opportunities to strengthen operations and explore new markets. However, entrepreneurs should verify eligibility requirements and application procedures through official government channels before submitting personal or business information.
