‎The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further solidified its majority in the Senate following the defection of four lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday.
‎
‎With the latest defections, the APC now holds 70 out of 109 seats in the 10th Senate, up from the 50 it secured at the inauguration of the current Assembly in June 2023.
‎
‎The PDP’s strength has consequently dwindled to 28 seats, following a wave of defections that have also affected the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
‎
‎Speaking on the development, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the defections as a reflection of Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
‎
‎“For us, it is not just about the numbers. We have a serious job ahead to ensure that members and stakeholders remain committed to the ideals of our party. We are doing everything possible to move Nigeria to the next level, and we do not take this momentum for granted,” Bamidele stated on the Senate floor.

‎The growing numerical advantage places the APC in a firmer position to push through legislative priorities as the 10th National Assembly continues its term.
