  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Benue Killings: Senate Demands Security Overhaul After 113 Deaths, Orders Urgent Investigation.

The Nigerian Senate has called for urgent security reforms and intensified military and police operations following reports that 113 people, including six Mobile Police officers, were killed in four separate attacks on communities in Benue State.

The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve early warning systems and establish effective rapid response mechanisms to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.

The Senate’s intervention followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende, who represents Benue North-East Senatorial District. The motion highlighted recurring violence in Ukum, Katsina Ala and Logo Local Government Areas, where residents have faced deadly attacks, destruction of property and disruption of economic activities.

According to reports presented to the Senate, the attacks resulted in significant loss of life and heightened concerns about the safety of residents in the affected communities.

Four Attacks Leave 113 People Reportedly Dead

During deliberations, Udende identified four separate incidents that collectively accounted for the reported death toll.

He said 24 people were killed in an attack on Sai community in Katsina Ala Local Government Area, while another assault on Bom and Aboajio villages in Ukum Local Government Area reportedly claimed 63 lives.

In a separate incident in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area, 15 people, including six Mobile Police personnel, were reportedly killed.

Another attack on Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages in Ukum on October 8, 2026, reportedly left 11 people dead and caused further destruction of property.

The reported figures bring the total number of fatalities across the four incidents to 113.

The killings have intensified concerns about the vulnerability of rural communities, particularly in areas where repeated violence has threatened residents’ safety, livelihoods and access to essential services.

Senate Calls for Stronger Security Operations

Following deliberations, the Senate urged the Federal Government to take immediate measures to stop further attacks in Ukum, Katsina Ala and Logo, as well as other vulnerable parts of Benue State.

The lawmakers called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff and relevant security and intelligence chiefs to reinforce operations in affected areas.

Their demands included deploying adequate security personnel and operational resources, improving intelligence gathering, strengthening early-warning systems and ensuring faster responses to emerging threats.

The Senate also called for thorough investigations into the reported killings, the identification and arrest of those responsible, and their prosecution in accordance with the law.

The resolutions underscore the need for security agencies to improve preventive operations rather than relying primarily on responses after attacks have occurred.

The reported killing of six Mobile Police officers has also raised questions about the operational capacity of security personnel deployed to protect communities facing persistent armed violence.

During the debate, Senator Jide Ipinshagba expressed concern about the implications of attacks that claim the lives of security personnel, particularly for civilians who have limited means of defending themselves.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio subsequently directed the Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence to work with relevant agencies to identify measures for strengthening security operations and personnel deployment.

Attacks Disrupt Farming and Increase Displacement Concerns

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the attacks have reportedly destroyed property, disrupted farming and other economic activities, and increased the risk of displacement among residents.

The impact is particularly significant in rural communities where many households depend on agriculture for food, income and economic stability.

Continued insecurity can prevent farmers from accessing their land, interrupt local markets and increase pressure on families already struggling to maintain their livelihoods.

The Senate expressed concern about these humanitarian consequences and called for urgent assistance for affected residents.

It urged the National Emergency Management Agency to collaborate with the Benue State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to provide relief materials and support to victims.

Such assistance is important for families who may have lost relatives, homes, property and sources of income during the attacks.

However, sustained protection of affected communities will also require effective security coordination, timely intelligence, accountability for perpetrators and measures that enable displaced residents to return safely to their homes.

Renewed Pressure on Nigeria’s Security Response

The Senate’s intervention adds to continuing concerns about Nigeria’s ability to protect communities from recurring attacks and prevent further loss of life.

The latest reports from Benue highlight the importance of a coordinated response involving federal and state authorities, security agencies and emergency management institutions.

While deploying additional personnel may help strengthen security in affected locations, effective intelligence gathering, operational readiness, rapid intervention and investigations are also essential to preventing repeated attacks.

For residents of Ukum, Katsina Ala and Logo, the immediate priority remains protection from further violence, assistance for affected families and the restoration of conditions that allow farming and other daily activities to resume safely.

The Senate has called for urgent action, but the effectiveness of the response will ultimately depend on the implementation of its resolutions and the ability of security agencies to deliver measurable improvements in the protection of lives and property.
