  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Within 48 Hours as Trump Renews Military Threats.

Iran has announced its readiness to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, provided the United States agrees to a series of conditions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict and easing economic restrictions against Tehran.

The announcement, made on Monday by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, represents a significant adjustment to Tehran’s earlier proposal, which had suggested a seven day timeline for restoring access to the critical international shipping route.

Speaking during a press briefing, Baghaei described the revised timeframe as another indication of Iran’s willingness to pursue a diplomatic resolution. He confirmed that messages were still being exchanged between Tehran and Washington through mediators but stressed that implementation depended entirely on the United States accepting Iran’s demands.

Among Tehran’s principal conditions are an end to hostilities across all fronts in the Middle East, the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad, the lifting of sanctions targeting its oil sector and the termination of the American naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also outlined additional requirements, including an agreement with Oman on a new shipping arrangement through the strait and a reduction in American military deployments across the region.

The proposal comes amid intensified diplomatic efforts involving Qatar, which has been facilitating indirect communication between the two countries. Iranian officials have been engaging with regional intermediaries in an attempt to establish a framework for negotiations and prevent another escalation of military hostilities.

However, prospects for an immediate agreement remain uncertain, particularly as Washington and Tehran continue to disagree over security arrangements, sanctions and Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump Renews Military Pressure on Tehran

The diplomatic developments are unfolding against a backdrop of renewed military rhetoric from US President Donald Trump.

Trump has continued issuing warnings about possible further military action against Iran, maintaining that Washington is prepared to pursue its objectives if diplomatic negotiations fail.

His latest remarks come as the United States approaches its midterm elections, with the economic consequences of the Middle East conflict adding pressure to an already politically sensitive situation.

Iran, meanwhile, has warned that any fresh military aggression would attract an immediate and comprehensive response.

Baghaei reiterated Tehran’s position on Monday, warning that any military attack against the country, regardless of its form, would be met with a forceful response.

The contrasting positions highlight the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations, with diplomatic engagement continuing alongside threats of renewed confrontation.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters to the Global Economy

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Before the conflict, the narrow waterway facilitated the movement of approximately one fifth of global oil consumption, making it indispensable to international energy markets.

Its disruption has intensified concerns about global oil supplies, shipping costs, energy security and inflation, particularly for countries heavily dependent on imported petroleum products.

For African economies, the situation also carries significant implications. Countries dependent on imported refined petroleum products and international shipping could face additional economic pressures if disruptions persist. Rising global energy prices could further affect transportation, manufacturing and the cost of essential commodities across the continent.

Although some African oil producing countries could benefit from higher crude prices, the broader economic consequences remain complex, particularly for economies vulnerable to currency pressures and imported inflation.

Diplomatic Breakthrough or Another Standoff?

Iran’s latest offer presents Washington with another opportunity to pursue a negotiated settlement, but the conditions attached to the proposal underscore how far apart the two countries remain.

Tehran has indicated that reopening the waterway could also provide an opportunity to resume broader negotiations, including discussions surrounding its nuclear programme.

However, there is currently no indication that Washington has accepted Iran’s conditions or that an agreement has been finalized.

The coming days will therefore be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can produce a breakthrough or whether the confrontation will move towards another phase of military escalation.

For the international community, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is about more than resolving a bilateral dispute. It is closely connected to global energy security, international trade and economic stability.
