  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Di protesters dey demand urgent government action because the bad state of the road dey make movement difficult for residents, traders, farmers and motorists. During rainy season, some parts of the road dey almost impossible to pass, and e dey affect how farmers dey carry their produce go market.

Deputy Governor Idahosa meet with the youths during the protest and listen to their concerns about the road. The meeting give the state government opportunity to hear directly from residents about the hardship wey the road condition dey cause them.

Di Benin-Abraka Road matter no be new one. Government and community stakeholders don raise the issue several times over the years, and different plans don also dey announced for reconstruction.

For 2018, Edo State Government under former Governor Godwin Obaseki agree for reconstruction of about 105.6 kilometres of the road through a financing arrangement involving Edo State Government, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Area Development Commission, EDSOGPADEC.

Di road matter still cause another controversy for 2025 after some Orhionmwon youths protest over the commissioning of wetin dem describe as Abraka-Oben Road project. The youths argue say the road wey dem know for the area na Benin-Abraka Road and say the Orhionmwon section still need serious attention.

But the Edo representative for NDDC board, Patrick Asowerien, later explain say na only the first phase of about 9.8 kilometres of the Abraka-Oben project dem commission, while construction of the Orhionmwon section wey dey connect to Benin-Abraka highway never start at that time.

Di long-standing condition of the road don affect farming and local business for Orhionmwon well well. Farmers dey depend heavily on the route to carry cassava, plantain, yam and other farm produce from rural communities enter Benin and other markets.

Apart from movement and economic activities, bad portions of the road fit also cause security concerns. For June 2026, police report say dem stop one kidnapping attempt along a failed section of Benin-Abraka Road near the NNPC Pipeline area and rescue passengers inside one commercial bus.

For the protesters, the main issue be say dem want government to give the road serious attention and make sure reconstruction work reach the communities wey dey suffer from the condition of the route.

The meeting between Idahosa and the protesting youths come at a time when pressure dey continue from residents and community groups for government to address the infrastructure problem.

Obaland Magazine understand say road infrastructure no be only about movement. For communities wey depend on farming, trading and daily transportation, good road fit affect how quickly farmers sell their produce, how businesses move goods and how residents reach schools, hospitals and other important services.

As Edo State Government dey respond to the concerns raised by the youths, residents go dey expect clear information about the next steps for Benin-Abraka Road, including when work go continue, which sections government dey target and how the project funding go support completion

Orhionmwon youths don protest the bad condition of Benin-Abraka Road as Edo Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa meet them and hear their concerns about the long-standing road problem.
