  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Tragic Loss: 30-Year-Old Graduate Dies by Suicide in ImoThe tragic death of Nerus Elemamba, a 30-year-old graduate of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Imo state, has left the community of Umuohii, Oboama, Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area, reeling in shock and sorrow. Nerus was found dead in his room on Monday evening, his body tragically hanging from the ceiling.

According to reports from a source close to the situation, Nerus had been seen earlier in the day, participating in the village’s manual labor activities with his peers. There were no apparent signs of distress or depression observed by those who interacted with him.

The sudden and unexpected nature of Nerus’s death has left the community stunned and searching for answers. He was described as a healthy and active member of the community, with no indication of any underlying issues that could have led to such a drastic decision.

Further details from another source revealed that Nerus did not leave behind any suicide notes, adding to the mystery surrounding his tragic demise. Known as the second son of late Mr. Cajethan Elemamba, Nerus’s unexpected death has left his family and the entire community in mourning.

Iheukwumere Ibeh, the youth leader of the village, expressed shock and disbelief at the tragic turn of events. He confirmed that Nerus had been laid to rest after the necessary cultural rituals had been performed to honor his memory and appease the land.

Despite the efforts of the community to come to terms with the loss and provide support to Nerus’s family, many questions remain unanswered. The absence of a clear motive or explanation for his decision to take his own life has left those who knew him grappling with a sense of bewilderment and sadness.

When reached for comment, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, stated that he had not yet been briefed on the incident, indicating that the investigation into Nerus’s death is still ongoing.

The tragic loss of Nerus Elemamba serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within communities. As loved ones mourn his passing and seek to understand the circumstances surrounding his death, efforts to promote open dialogue and destigmatize discussions around mental health remain crucial.

Mental health challenges are not always visible, and creating an environment where people feel safe expressing distress without fear of judgement can make it easier for them to seek help. Access to compassionate professional care is equally important, with treatment tailored to each person’s circumstances and needs.

For individuals experiencing certain mental health conditions, options such as ketamine therapy may be considered following a thorough assessment by a qualified healthcare professional, including treatments offered by providers such as Avesta Ketamine. Alongside clinical care, supportive relationships, early intervention, and open conversations about emotional well-being can help people feel less isolated during difficult periods.

Strengthening these forms of support remains an important step towards building communities where mental health concerns are taken seriously and people are encouraged to seek help when they need it.
